Fishing Report
Lake is
about normal and the water is clear in nearly all sections of the
lake. Surface temp is running from 62 to 66 degrees and the fishing
should explode during
the coming week or so. We have been catching large numbers
of stripers nearly every day as they are moving up into the Red River
to spawn. We had a major movement on the full moon of April 15 and
the fish that went up
into the river in March should be returning any day
now. May is traditionally one of the best months of the year as the
fish come out of the
river from spawning and are really ready to feed on a
consistent basis. Live bait has been the bait of choice and will probably
continue to be that way for the next few weeks. We have been drifting
small shiners on a carolina type rig with about a 30 inch leader.
Keep your hook small and the weight as lite as you can(use only enough
weight so that you can feel it bumping the bottem). Work the water
from 14 to 20 foot deep on the flats and along the river channel and
you should find plenty of fish. We have been using the new Owner Circle
hooks is size 1 or 1/0 and the hook up rate has improved and probably
98% of the fish are hooked in the side of the mouth and can be easily
released. Try these hooks and you will probably like them if you are
going to fish live bait. They are really good if you have beginning
fisherman because the
one thing that you don't want to do with these hooks
is to set the hook yourself, just let the fish do it. Topwater action
has been slow lately but should begin to pick up as the fish come
out of the river from
spawning. It should only get better in the coming days
so now is the time for fishing at Texoma. Good Luck and Be Safe!
Pro Profile
I started fishing Texoma in 1961 and
did a lot of bass fishing while wading and using a small boat. I began guiding up there
in 1982 on a part time basis and went full time in 1992. I fish primarily for stripers and
do a little sand bass fishing at certain
times of the year. I am putting a new 20ft Falcon King Striper together right now and
should have it on the water in the next 2 weeks. I fish only artificial but will book
trips with some of the other guides if a client insists on live bait. I charge $200 for 2
people, $275 for 3, and $350 for 4(I prefer no more than 3 if possible). I furnish all
tackle and clean and package the fish at the end of the trip. Most trips run 6 1/2 to 7
hours or until the clients decide they want to keep a limit of fish. I can arrange lodging
at the Tackle Box(where I work out of) or at other locations on request. I can be reached
at 972-680-FISH (3474) for booking trips. My e-mail address is and I will be happy to answer as many
questions as possible.
