Lake Fayette County Profile
Lake Fayette
County is a great bass fishing lake with a similar slot limit to Fork (14 to 24) which has
produced a healthy population of big largemouth up to the lake record of 12.25 pounds. We
urge you to give Bill Speer a call and set up a trip to learn this lake and enjoy the
great bass fishing. Besides bass it has a good population of huge blue cats. Impounded in
1978 the lake is 2,400 surface acre feet.
Lake Fayette
County is one of the top Power Plant Lakes where on a 2400 acre impoundment you have a
chance of catching that bass of a lifetime. The Lake is under the Lower Colorado River
Authority.
Location |
Lake Fayette County is located 15 miles northeast of La
Grange Texas, off State Highway 159 in Fayette County. |
Fishing
Regulations |

Comments |
If
you like consistently catching large bass, this is one of the most productive lakes I've
ever fished. Catches of 20-50 fish per day are very common, especially in the spring. This
lake has almost every type of structure, hydrilla, pepper grass, lilly pads, timber, rip
rap, sand, creek and river channels. The newly improved facilities that the LCRA put in
place makes fishing there more enjoyable. One thing to keep in mind about this lake,
fishing pressure can be very high at times. If you've ever been to Fork in the springtime,
you'll understand what I mean. Don't let all the other boats fool you though. Savvy bass
fishermen still pull large numbers of fish from the lake and safely release them. Please
release your catch. Most taxidermists can make a better looking fiberglass replica from a
picture anyway and the fish swims away to be caught another day! |
Facilities |
There are two launching ramps, Park Prairie which is marked
on the map above as number one. Park Prairie is located off Hwy. 196 and is open year
round (409-249-9923) and the other launch is at Oak Thicket which is marked on the map
above as number 2. Oak Thicket is located off Hwy 159 and is open only on weekends and
holidays (409-249-5322). |

Tip |
If
you're looking for that 19 lb. state record, this may not be the lake for you. If you like
catching large numbers of fish in the 2-7 lb class, this lake's right up your alley! One
of the most consistent patterns is a Carolina rigged centipede in a watermelon color.
Watch what other fisherman are doing and then do something different. I've found that
although I'll catch some fish in the grass or in timber, the large majority of the fish
are on subtle drops away from structure. Also in the fall, the lake explodes with
schooling action!!! Try a clear Tiny Torpedo or Fluke shad colored worm to get in on some
of the hottest topwater action around. If the fish seem to come up and then go down, try
ripping a Little George through the school. Another productive pattern in the spring is to
drift waterdogs behind the boat over grass flats. For those of you who are artificial lure
traditionalists, a Carolina rigged "waterdog colored"
lizard will do almost as good. I also on occasion have been known to pull out the trusty
fly rod. For those of you who have never felt a 4 lb bass on a fly rod, this is something
you must not miss! Be sure and bring your heart medicine!!! Give me a call at
